Thalgo Wrinkle Control Smoothing Concentrate Serum

Thalgo Wrinkle Control Smoothing Concentrate SerumThalgo Austalian beauty experts think that algae is the answer to your anti-aging woes. Researchers at Thalgo have spent years working with different types of algae to produce the company’s patented “Substance Initiale Marine,” (SIM) a vital ingredient in most of their anti-aging products, including the Thalgo Wrinkle Control Smoothing Concentrate Serum.

While the actual creative process and total list of ingredients are secret, Thalgo researchers say that the formula for SIM is based around algae that are very high in calcium, magnesium and copper, as well as certain “algal hormones.”

These algal hormones are believed to cause the formation of elastin, a springy protein that keeps skin firm and resilient, and collagen, which helps cells maintain their shape and rigidity over time. In short, rubbing a sweet-smelling, highly processed version of this algae on your face helps your skin hold its youthful shape and keep a natural glow as you age.

The serum should be used once in the morning and once in the evening after washing your face. It comes in a beautiful frosted glass pump jar with a silver lid, and you need only one squirt for each treatment.

Drawbacks:

While it is very appealing to imagine a product that embodies the power and beauty of the ocean, there is little evidence to suggest that this specific product actually works the way that the company says it does. Furthermore, there are several smaller, more practical concerns as well:

  • The packaging, while pretty, makes it very hard to determine how much of the product you have used.
  • Some users have experienced severe breakouts using Thalgo products.
  • Overuse of copper, one of the main ingredients in the serum that is believed by some researchers to stimulate collagen production, can actually stimulate collagen breakdown in some individuals, so you should consult a dermatologist before using the product.

Benefits:

Thalgo claims that this cream will “visibly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines whilst plumping and smoothing skin.” There are also some other benefits to this wrinkle-reducing serum.

  • While Thalgo recommends that you use the wrinkle reducing serum as part of an extended beauty regimen, it can be used as an independent product to tone the skin.
  • Thalgo is designed for sensitive skin and has even been known to heal red and inflamed facial tissue.

Guarantee

  • Thalgo makes no official or specific guarantee for its Thalgo Wrinkle Control Smoothing Concentrate Serum, but the website does promise that the Australia-based company’s products are “only recommended by professional Beauty Therapists and…not tested on animals.”

My Review

Skin cells flatten and shrink as they get older and are pushed closer to the surface of the face by the new cells growing below. Our skin is constantly regenerating, but our body’s ability to create new, resilient and youthful-looking cells is compromised when we reach our mid-twenties to mid-thirties, depending on our genetic background. Our bodies stop creating hormones that produce large amounts of elastin and collagen, which causes our skin cells—and therefore our skin—to become thinner and drier. This is what causes our skin to wrinkle, line and tear as we age.

Thalgo Wrinkle Control Smoothing Concentrate Serum is supposed to help skin make more collagen and elastin by stimulating production via minerals in the algae. While their Substance Initiale Marine formula does have high amounts of copper, which has been shown to increase amounts of collagen in the skin, it does not contain zinc, which is the only mineral currently even suspected of elastin stimulation or production. Scientifically, there is little evidence to back up the claims made by the company.

While Thalgo has made quite a name for itself in the arena of acne treatments, the results for its anti-aging formulas are much more inconclusive. While the lotion hydrates the skin, it is difficult to distinguish a significant or dramatic change in the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. This serum would probably make a good moisturizing treatment for use as part of a more extended beauty regimen, but it likely will fail to perform satisfactorily on its own. Considering the high price of the product and the lack of a guarantee or protection on your investment, you should be sure that you consider using the Thalgo Wrinkle Control Smoothing Concentrate Serum as an experimental procedure rather than a truly reliable treatment.
